hi all, I've just bought a new machine and started playing around in linux. [I'd better mention that DOS and Descent both have run ok on this machine so far] Within a minute or two of booting the machine started giving errors like these: trying to free non-existent swap-page [0 21c 565]sys_sync: 1 dirty buffers not on dirty list when moving around the dirs after a while ls stopped working and started giving seg faults and bus errors. Most of the time the machine just crashed but one time it paniced and gave the following errors: swap_free: swap-space map bad (entry 00080000) trying to free space from unused swapdev swap_free: weirdness swap_free:swap_space map bad (entry 00020000) Now, all this happened when booting off both floppys and similar problems occured when booting the system off the HDD (one from my previous machine). I have two pairs of boot floppys and root disks and no ammount of shuffling changes anything. The kernel is finding the PCI devices etc. I'm inclined to think it is bad memory. Any suggestions? System specs: ASUS P/I-P55TP4 motherboard with PnP bios 3 PCI, 3 ISA, onboard Busmastering EIDE Pentium 90 16 Mb RAM (I'm not sure if the is parity or not... I'm going to find out) 512K cache 1 Gb Quantum EIDE drive, 1 Conner 252 Mb drive. #include <std_disclaimer.h> +--------------------+-----------------------------------+ | Robert Stuart | Board of Senior Secondary School | | Ph 61-7-3864 0366 | Studies | | Fax 61-7-3832 1329 | email: robert@bssssq.edu.au | +--------------------------------------------------------+ | Beware the fury of a patient man | | Free curiosity is a greater encouragement to learning | | than frightened compulsion. | +--------------------------------------------------------+
