Reading ancient tapes using Emulex MD21 SCSI board
#421

I have a quantity of 60 mbyte 1/4" cartridges which I wish to read,
and copy the data onto a CDR for posterity. Unfortunately, my gear
doesn't quite work ...

1 x Linux box (2.2.17 kernel)
with 1 x AHA1542CF SCSI controller (ISA, very old one, 50-pin centronics)
with 1 x Centronics DB50 to old Sun type (50-pin, 3 rows) cable
1 x Sun 3 shoebox
containing 1 x Emulex MD21 SCSI-to-ESDI card
and 1 x 1/4" 60 mbyte cartridge drive. No other SCSI devices.

I remember the ESDI disk used to go in the bottom of the shoebox,
and the MD21 did the SCSI-to-ESDI mapping so the Sun3 box could
access it as a SCSI disk.

I don't remember whether the MD21 drove the tape also.

In configuring the AHA1542CF, I had to turn off Fast SCSI (quite
understandable considering the age of the gear it is driving). Also
the cable isn't terminated, not sure whether this is causing
further problems. Can't find my old Sun3 terminator.

When I boot Linux it recognises the controller and spends a long
time to identify 2 (yes!) SCSI disks, at id=1 and id=5. Both the
MD21. Now interestingly there aren't any disks there at all. It
can't see any tapes. When I use the AHA1542 BIOS diagnostics the
controller sees the MD21 on id=1 and it pauses on id=5, but does
not recognise a device on it.

Now on the kernel side I note that drivers/scsi/scsi.c has the
Emulex in its blacklist to prevent multi-LUN scanning. I seem
to recall the MD21 can actually map 2 ESDI disks; don't recall
whether they appear as 2 separate SCSI ids.

Theories:
	- the tape drive is too old to obey the identification protocol
	- the unterminated cable makes the comms dodgy
	- my AHA1542CF is too old to recognise the tape drive
	- the MD21 is not needed and is confusing the issue

I'm about to go and pull the tape unit apart to see whether I do
actually need the MD21. Does anybody have any other ideas? (apart
from borrowing a working internal SCSI drive).

Nick.

Find a QIC-150 scsi drive. It will read 60Mb tapes, just not write
them. They're a dime-a-dozen here in the States, probably pretty
cheap down under too.

I found the tape drive is actually driven by its own controller
board (not the Emulex MD21, thankfully!). I unplugged the MD21
and Linux can now see the tape drive but read/write operations
do not work.

Also the tape drive identifies itself as "Sequential Access" but
the SCSI identification fields are all null. Maybe normal...!

This is probably caused by the missing terminator. You'll need
at least passive termination on the drive to get that working.
I have to agree with the previous' poster: Get yourself a
borrowed QIC-150 SCSI tape drive instead, as it can easily
read 60 MB cartridges, although you'll have to experiment
with the blocksize that the Sun had used when writing to the
tape.

having a Wangtek 5150es (its the scsi version). I have made
DC600A tapes on it without a hitch! Forget those DC300XLs! Those wont
write (never tried a read). if the tapes are DC600s you should not
have a problem. PROVINDING that the restore software is the same type
as on the SUN. If the sun used dump. use dump to read em back. if tar
use tar. if it was cpio, try the gnu cpio.

If you use the lower density DC600A tapes and write with a QIC150
tape drive, the resulting tapes will be 125mb and will not be readable
in a 60mb tape drive.
You will be able to read them with a QIC150 tape drive, though.

A kind soul is going to post me a QIC-150 SCSI drive tomorrow ... :-)

The interesting things will be tars. Sometimes many to a tape. There
will be some dumps as well, perhaps Linux dump can read the format
written by SunOS 4.x

Whatever files I can get out of it, I will uncompress, compare
(disregarding duplicate versions), rearrange a bit then write
onto a few CDRs. When the CDRs become an obsolete storage medium
I'll copy them onto something else :-)

With tar, you'll have an endian issue reading sun3-written tapes on
Lunix (i386, I assume). At least that's what I saw reading tar tapes
from an NCR tpwer (68020) on NetBSD/i386.

hmm. i think i have sunos 4.1.1_u1 for sun3 and sun3x on qic60.. when you're
done with the drive, maybe i can borrow it so i can rescue the data and write
it out to cdrom too :-)

You can always download SunOS 4.1.1 for sun3 or sun3x
from the Sun3/3x-Archive: http://sun3arc.krupp.net
The stuff will be available as long as the trusty ol'
Sun3/260 runs... and maybe much much longer...
