I'm experiencing problems with conflicts between the eth0 device (ne2000 isa ethernetcard) and my sound device (cs4232 pnp device), and i'm not sure this is due to a hardware conflict, or kernel problems. The ne2000 clone uses irq 11 and io 0x300. I use isapnp to initialize the cs4232 to the usual settings, and then do "insmod sound; insmod ad1848; insmod uart401; insmod cs4232 io=0x534 irq=11 dma=1 dma2=3". You can see in the log it initializes nicely: ------- /var/log/messages --------- Apr 16 00:51:02 intra kernel: ad1848/cs4248 codec driver Copyright (C) by Hannu Savolainen 1993-1996A ------- (end) --------------------- Now, the problem is that from the moment i start playing some sound, say with x11amp, my ethernetcard totally freezes up, pinging anything eventually results in a segmentation fault. I tried changing the ethernet card's irq between 10 and 5, but same problem exists. These are the errors i get in /var/log/syslog, just after firing up a .mp3 with x11amp (mind: the sound works! i hear great cd quality, crisp sound out of my boxes). -------- /var/log/syslog ---------- Apr 16 00:51:50 intra kernel: eth0: trigger_send() called with the transmitter busy. ^^
Your NE2000 clone and CS4232 should not use the same IRQ. Change the
configuration file for isapnp to use a free IRQ.
You can find out which IRQs are in use with `cat /proc/interrupts'.

Ofcourse they can't be on the same irq, that would start worldwide mayhem :) Nico Galoppo

It should be obvious that you are using some conflicting resouces (not just
interrupts).
So, make sure the sound card is not automatically configured. and Reboot..
With out the
sound card configured, goto to the proc directory, and print out the files:
interrupts
ioports
dma
These files report resources that are currently in use. Then adjust your
sound card isapnp configuration around existing resource. Make a test run,
(which may fail still on dma). If it
fails adjust one parameter at a time (usually the flaky ones first {dma,
ioports, interrupts}.
Once you have it working, write it down! in a hardcopy log file, dated. A
simple paper
date/problem/solution logbook can solve many problems after an upgrade. The
procedures
(failed and suscessful) that you used to find a solution should also be
logged. It may
help you analysis similar problems.
Now for the last bit of news. My SB16 clone never worked correctly with my
NE2000
clone (the ioport conflicts couldn't be resloved). I finally bought a PCI
ethernet card. The
PCI card had much large resources range then the ISA card did.
Good luck,
Steven Howe
