HELP! Sector error on hard drive

Hello,

	I'm getting the following errors from my hard drive; I'm using
RedHat 3.0.3 with the 2.0.0 kernel. I'd *REALLY* appreciate any tips
that you have be email'd as well as posted, since our site's newsfeed
is not too good (I *WILL* search these groups for the answer! :-):

hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
hda: read_intr: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
ide0: reset: success

(the above repeats in its entirety, then):

end_request: I/O error, dev 03:07, sector 417945
cp: bad_file: I/O error

	Is there anything I can do to save my disk? I can rebuild the
file, but I'm loathe to lose 1.2 megs just because one sector in that
file is bad.

	Do IDE drives have a sector-remap capability like SCSI disks
do? Should I be using a newer kernel?

	Thanks VERY much in advance,

I have the similar problem with 2.0.20 but it happened on my IDE CDROM
connected to second channel of the IDE controller only. In addition, it
reported once only and didn't cause any trouble afterwards.

Have you included the Chipset support for CMD, INTEL, ALI, etc. in the
kernel? Try select the chipset of you board.
