Help with AHA1542CF and Seagate ST3600N

I've just gotten an aha1542cf and a seagate st3600n HD (supposedly fast
scsi2). When I run with this as the root on a system that has been
EIDE-based up til now, I get scsi time outs and the scsi hd makes a
clicking sound at the same time. It seems to happen at disk-intensive
times, like boot-up or running X.

I've got a system that looks like this:
AMD 486DX2/80
VLB MB (generic)
generic VLB video with Cirrus 5826 chip and 1Mb VRAM
8MB RAM
used aha1542cf - irq11,dma7,io0x330,bios enabled at d8000
used seagate st3600n 500MB hd
maxtor eide 800mb hd (hda)
soundblaster 16 - irq5,dma1&5,io0x300
sony cdu55e eide cdrom as hdc
generic vlb eide 4-hd controller
iomega 250 insider ("jumbo"?) floppy tape drive
3.5 1.44mb fd

Does anyone have any ideas? You can post here or send to terrym@cais.com

Thanks for any help!

Is the SCSI bus terminated at both ends? If you are using external
SCSI terminators, have you removed the SCSI terminators from the disk
drive and other SCSI devices (if any)? Is it possible that one of the
devices for which you don't list an IRQ actually has an IRQ of 11 (the
same as the SCSI host adaptor)? Is it possible that two of the devices
on the SCSI bus have the same LUN? (Remember that the host adaptor
itself has a logical unit number, typically 7, sometimes 0 or 6.)

Sorry to ask such simple questions, but there was a time when I
wouldn't have thought of these things.
