Dear netters,

I currently run Linux 1.1.59 from the Slackware 2.10 distribution. I also a
Always IN2000 SCSI controller that I use with it. I currently has a Tandberg
tape and a NEC CD-ROM attached to it - here is an excerpt from the dmesg
command:

IN-2000 probe got dip setting of 7F
IN-2000 probe found hdw. vers. 25, BIOS at 0d8000
IN-2000 probe found floppy controller on IN-2000 disabled
IN-2000 probe found IN-2000 in asynchronous mode
Configuring IN2000 at IO:220, IRQ 15
scsi0 : Always IN2000
scsi : 1 hosts.
Vendor: TANDBERG Model: TDC 3600 Rev: U08:
Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 01
Detected scsi tape st0 at scsi0, id 2, lun 0
  Vendor: NEC Model: CD-ROM DRIVE:36 Rev: 1.0
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 01
Detected scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, id 6, lun 0
scsi : detected 1 SCSI tape 1 SCSI cdrom total.
Scd sectorsize = 2048 bytes

Okay - the tape works perfect. The CD-ROM doesn't - even though it is
detected properly it hangs when I try to mount a CD in it (mount -r -t
iso7660 /dev/sr0 /cdrom). My kernel contains all necessary devices and
filesystems.

cat /proc/devices shows:
Character devices:
 1 mem
 4 ttyp
 5 cua
 6 lp
 9 st
21 sg

Block devices:
 2 fd
 3 hd
11 sr

cat /proc/filesystems shows:
	minix
	ext2
	umsdos
	msdos
nodev	proc
nodev	nfs
	iso9660

ls -l /dev/sr? shows:
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 11, 0 Feb 15 19:14 /dev/sr0
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 11, 1 Feb 15 19:15 /dev/sr1

I now know that this problem supposedly is fixed from kernel 1.1.78 on. My
question now is how i could use that knowledge ...

Can I upgrade my .../linux/drivers/scsi/in2000.c file on version 1.1.59?

Should I upgrade my kernel to 1.1.78 or higher? And if yes - do I have to
upgrade my gcc and libc etc. to a newer version? What would a stable and
good kernel version?

I know how to compile and install kernels - I adapted the current one to my
specific machine.

Any hints or pointers are welcome,
