Well, I just have bought a new PC which is:

PII 300MhZ (not overclocked)
64 Mo ram
Motherboard ASUS P2B (BX Chipset)
AGP ATI video card
voodoo2 card
D-Link PCI network card
D-Link ISA network card
Adaptec SCSI 2940
6 Go UDMA Seagate IDE Disk

I have installed RedHat 5 with kernel 2.0.32
the install from CD has taken less than 5 mins
and everything seemed fine.

after the install I have the following problem:

Disk writing seems very slow
when I do a tar xvzf of a linux-2.0.33.tar.gz
it writes and decompress 20 files and freeze for some seconds
does the following 20 files and freeze again some seconds
and so on .. the whole operation takes more than 5 mins !

What is amazing is that the installation process
took less than 5 mins and now to decompress and untar
a 6 Mb archive it takes 5 mins.

The used kernel is the 2.0.32 provided in the RedHat 5.0

I thought it was an IDE problem since the controller
is on the motherboard card, thus I added a SCSI Disk
on the adaptec, and tryed the same test, same result....

If someone has any advices, kernel options to try, anything
that may help, please email me at salim@gasmi.net

Ooops I forgot to say, under Win95 everything is fine
and is on the same disk.

Thanks in advance

Salim

This problem has been fixed, you should have a look from times to times to
redhat product errata (www.redhat.com) :

get the patch & intall it! You should get others fix too, as it may fix
futures problems ;-)

Following is a translation into french as it has been posted in
