Hello, Linux and/or SUN users.

I really don't know if this question has to be addressed to some
"comp.sys.linux" or some "comp.sys.sun" group.

Does someone know a method for reading on a Linux machine 8mm
tapes written on SUN systems with tar? When I try to read such
tape I get the following error:

	prompt# tar tvf /dev/nrmt0
tar: read error on /dev/nrmt0 : I/O error

On both systems I am using similar EXABYTE (Model: EXB-8200) units.

I can admit that the tape formats on both architectures are different,
but what I cannot understand is why old tapes (written on SUNs before
about the middle of 1991) can be red, while newer ones can not! Did SUN
changed the tape drivers in the kernel?

I think the reason is not the "tar" program since I am using it to
transfer files between my SUN (SunOS and Solaris with SUN's tar)
and Linux (with GNU tar) machines on floppies considered as raw
devices with no problems.

If there is such a difference in both tape formats, is it still possible
to read them using tools like "cpio", "dd" or "GNU tar" with non-standard
options?

Thank you for your answers!
