When I switched from an ISA BusLogic controller to a 445C, I did notice
it was faster than the ISA one. Make sure your MB has a bus-master
VLB slot and get the re-written BusLogic driver from lnz@dandelion.com.

You'll find it at ftp.dandelion.com, which will be faster than getting a
reply from Leonard telling you to ftp it from there.

I'd get one of the Ultrastor 34F boards. Make sure you put it in a master
slot, it flies pretty well. Becuase Ultrastor went Chapter 11, you can get
them very cheap ( $60 ). I used to get 3.5Meg/sec through this board.

I went from an ISA-busmaster Adaptec 1542C to the BusLogic 445. Things got
noticably faster, probably because if you have an ISA busmaster, OS/2 can't
use memory above 16M (I have 32M) for anything but real fast swapspace.
But I still wasn't able to run my drive at it's full rated speed.

Then I went to an IBM VL Bus SCSI adapter (a badge-engineered Adaptec),
and the drive then ran a full rated speed.

The U34F is cheap, but not all that fast. If you can afford it, the
Adaptec 2842 is a much better adapter.

The most important consideration in adding VLB adapters to your system
is that the VLB spec only allows for 2 adapters at 33 MHz and up. I've
never been able to get 3 VLB adapters to work together above 25 MHz,
even if none of them were bus-masters. (I.e., a video adapter, a dumb
IDE adapter, and a dumb 100Mbps ethernet adapter.)

Thanks for all the replies. It looks like VLB is the way to go. How much
improvement did you see in the IBM adapter vs the Buslogic? What are
the approximate prices? I was staying away from the Adaptec because I
had heard about so many cable sensitivity problems. Does the IBM have
the same problem?

Thanks.
