alt.uu.comp.os.linux.questions transmission from stewarth@arches.uga.edu loading...
100% loaded...please commence:
: I run Netscape 3.01 from command line and I get this
:
: netscape: '/usr/local/lib/netscape/plugins/java_301' is not an ELF file
: ERROR: Not an ELF file
: Cant load plugin /usr/local/lib/netscape/plugins/java_301. Ignored.
: Bus error
I'm not certain about the ELF file error, but I believe it may be produced
from the lack of JAVA support in the Linux kernel. You might want to try
recompiling a new kernel with JAVA support included.
: Netscape runs fine until I go to a site that has a lot of graphics, or
: lots of graphics and a java applet, then it just goes away. Then I fire
: it back up and the page loads fine. When it crashes it does not exit with
: an error message, it just goes away. Anyone got any ideas?
: Thanks.
This was a big discussion on other newsgroups and I found a solution (thanks
to a man who I have since forgotten his name) with the libraries.
1) Get a copy of gnumalloc.so and stash it into /lib. Get gnumalloc.so
from ftp://cheshire.catt.ncsu.edu/lib/gnumalloc.so
2) (I'm sure there's another way to do this more efficiently, but I haven't
really messed with it). Move netscape to netscape.bin (or something),
and write the following script as "netscape":
#!/bin/bash
export CLASSPATH="/usr/local/lib/netscape/java_301"
export LD_PRELOAD="/lib/gnumalloc.so"
/usr/local/bin/netscape.orig
# end of script
or put lines 2 and 3 into /etc/profile (if you use tcsh or csh, put
"setenv CLASSPATH /usr/local/lib/netscape/java_301 blah blah blah into
/etc/csh.cshrc). At any rate, regardless of what you do, make sure
LD_PRELOAD is defined as the library.
3) chmod +x netscape, obviously
4) run netscape. It should work okay now. I'm not certain as to the
exact cause of the bus error, but that, as far as I know, is impossible
with the Intel architecture and is thus a Netscape bug (can we say
bug number 1 zillion?)
This worked for me. The java_301 file did not load with mine before because
JAVA support wasn't compiled. It might be another reason with yours, but I
do not know.
