I can confirm this behavior as well.  We have a public-access cluster of
Linux boxes connected to a network with three Netblazer ST's.  We find that
when using rlogin from the netblazers, zmodem fails and pine puts garbage
all over the screen.  If we use telnet from the netblazers, everything
works.  Note also that using rlogin to another architecture (IBM or Sun)
works fine -- pine behaves, and zmodem works.  

We're puzzled as well... It's confusing a lot of our users.
