I have been trying to set up a getty on the serial lines on my linux computer but have only been partially succesfull. For testing purposes, I just connected two serial ports together with a null modem, and ran mgetty on one port with the following arguments: mgetty -r /dev/ttyC2 (The -r is so mgetty knows there is no modem attached.) After doing this, I could get a login prompt on the other serial line, but after entering a user name, login didn't ask for a password. By checking on another terminal, I could see that a login process had been started for the username I entered, but still no "Password:" prompt. I have also tried to get getty to call other programs (such as telnet and bash directly), and they work. Login is the only one that doesn't. I am running the Redhat 4.1 distribution, and any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated. If at all possible, could you mail as well as post your response to me.
