Hello everyone, I am having three problems getting Linux going. If anyone could help, I would be very grateful. 1) I have a Viper 550 card. One good IT Samaritan suggested that I download Xfree86 3.3.3.1, advice which I took. Since I can't get my video card to work, however, I can't open Netscape and downloaded it into Linux directly. So, I downloaded Xfree86 3.3.3.1 via Windows onto my DOS partition. But, obviously, it doesn't do me any good on the DOS partition. So, I'm wondering if there is any way I can transfer the .rpm file from DOS to Linux via Linux. Does anyone know? 2) How can I configure my modem? Because my video card isn't configured properly, I can't use X Windows to do it. Is there any other method of doing so? 3) Once I configure my modem, can I download XFree86 via Linux without using X Windows? Thanks in advance, Paul email: pjs38@columbia.edu

The simplest would be to do it as root: mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/dosdrive This will mount a partion /dev/hda1 (substitute hda1 with your device on which your dos resides). The filesystem is of type vfat and the mount point is /mnt/dosdrive (this directory must exist and be empty). You can customize this command to suit your needs. Mounting is really easy once you get it how it works. You can also use mcopy. Try man mcopy. > > 2) How can I configure my modem? This is a nice text-based terminal for dialing out. Also, have a look at the command netconf to setup your ppp. Once it's setup, use ifup ppp0 to startup the interface ppp0 > > 3) Once I configure my modem, can I download XFree86 via Linux without > using X Windows? > Seems obvious you can. LIke the other guy said.. you can mount many types of partitions. Make sure the directory you try to mount to is created. Here it is step by step in case you had problems.... first try typing dmesg | less and scroll through to look for entries that say information about your hard drive. It is likely hda1. then type mkdir /hard you can then mount your drive with mount -t msdos /dev/hda1 /hard You dont have you use hard for the mount point. You can use anything. Once it mounts you can navigate it just like any other drive. >2) How can I configure my modem? Because my video card isn't >configured properly, I can't use X Windows to do it. Is there any >other method of doing so? Check the jumper settings on your modem to see what com port it is installed under. Also make sure both your serial ports are disabled in your bios unless you need them. If your modem is jumpered to com 3 irq 5 for example, again, do dmesg | less and look for a thing that says TTYSx (could be 0,1,2,3) and about the UART speed.. that way you know the kernel is detecting the serial port of your modem and it should say TTYS2 (for com3). Then do setserial ttys2 irq 5, or whatever irq your modem is set to. use man setserial to figure that out. >3) Once I configure my modem, can I download XFree86 via Linux without >using X Windows? You will probably need a proper X Server for your viper 550. What chipset does it use... riva 128? Yes you can download it via FTP or Lynx. Hope that helped, Dennis

With Slackware, I placed XF86_SVGA in the X11R6 directory and, voila, the card worked. But with Red Hat 5.1, I don't know where to place the file, and how to make xf86config find it. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks again, Paul pjs38@columbia.edu On Mon, 15 Feb 1999 01:45:21 GMT, bklimas <bklimas@magma.ca> wrote: > > >PJS wrote: > >> >> Hello everyone, >> > >Hello. Even though you can't get to Netscape, you can use lynx ( the text-only browser)
without even running X. Just type 'lynx {url}' to pop up whatever page you
want.
I think one of the other people gave information on how to mount an MSDOS
partition, so I won't repeat that info here.
Enjoy!
