Managed to compile my kernel. I have now run into another problem. When I run 'lilo' it complains with /vmlinuz too big. WHy is this happening, do I have to 'scale down' my options to get a smaller kernel?? thanks in advance Glenn

I do a "make zImage" and it creates a compressed kernel in the boot/i386.../zImage. The directory is shows as one of the last "leaving" lines when you do the make zImage... Dan

You are using the wrong kernel image. The image that you want is src/linux/arch/i386/boot/zImage. Move this zImage to your /vmlinuz (rename the old one first just in case). when you have done this run lilo. This zImage is the compressed kernel image that lilo uses to boot. This is in the README in the src/linux directory. hope this helps. -- --------------------------------------------------------------- | Ralph D. Are you attempting to install the image contained in /usr/src/linux or the one in /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot. The second path contains the real compressed boot image. I usually compile the kernel with `make zlilo`. This installs the correct image for you. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Graham Broadbridge Internet <graham@peachy.apana.org.au> Marsfield NSW <vk2yui@amsat.org> Australia amprnet <vk2yui@vk2yui.ampr.org> +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+

This is uncompressed. the zImage kernel is in arch/i386/boot I believe. But look for it in the /arch/i386 directory tree. Matt

I haven't seen the original posting, but you can get the message complaining about the size of the newly installed kernel from Lilo. This happened to me when I forgot to reconfigure Lilo after kernel compilation (or after you install a different kernel from some distribution).
