Motif 1.2.4 under Xfree 3.1.1

Since a few days I am using Xfree 3.1.1. Installation and getting it running was
quite simple because I knew wat was to do from Xfree 2.1.

What makes problems is the interworking of Motif 1.2.4, which must use the
old X11R5 libraries and the X11R6 server. To be able to use Motif I kept the old

       /usr/X386/lib
       /usr/X386/include
       /usr/X386/lib/X11/config
       /usr/X386/bin/xmkmf

With this I am able to compile applications with the old X libraries, which is
neccessary for Motif. Even though compiling works fine, the programs crash
with a segmentation fault for different reasons. Until know I could isolate the
following error conditions:

  1. program calls XtSetLanguageProc (...)
  2. use of cut&paste functions of Motif (eg. XmTextCopy)
  3. setting of the dialogTitle resource for XmFormDialog

Even older Motif applications, which I was using happyly with Xfree 2.1, now
crash (one definitly because of reason 3).

Does someone experience the same problems? Has someone an idea how this
could be solved? I would appreciate any help.

Please send your comments to my e-mail address fackel@vnet.ibm.com, because
I don't regularly read this news groups.

Thanks in advance
-Franz
