File system type "0B" indicates FAT32, which is not supported by FIPS. Either repartition your drive manually with fdisk (destroying all content) or get System Commander (commercial), which can resize FAT32 partitions. jue -- Jrgen Exner; jurgenex AT microsoft.com Sorry for this anti-spam inconvenience wade wrote in message <349A5FEE.79259395@powerup.com.au>... >Hello I've tried to partition my drive with Fips (1.5), but, >it doesn't work....... >i followed all the directions carefully but when it checks >the file system it says 'Error unknown file system : 0BH' >(or something to that effect) >i have no idea why..... >but I do have pre installed the latest version of Windoze 95 >any help would be greatly appreciated > >wadE > >wade@powerup.com.au >

It's 19 Dec 97 21:52, We'll return to wade@powerup.com.au and All's discussion of Fips problems wa> i followed all the directions carefully but when it checks wa> the file system it says 'Error unknown file system : 0BH' wa> (or something to that effect) wa> i have no idea why..... wa> but I do have pre installed the latest version of Windoze 95 wa> any help would be greatly appreciated Sounds like you have a FAT32 formatted partition. You have 2 choices: 1. Purchase Partition Magic and resize the partition with that (it is a good product anyway, so might be worth it). 2. Backup, fdisk, install Linux and restore your Win 95 system. ... This is due to, I beleive the specifications for FAT32 being with-held by Microsoft Corporation, and hence is probably targetted at the Linux community, because FIPS won't work on them. Sorry about this. You can backup and delete, and make two new partitions. Let me repeat this, never format a Windows 95 partition in FAT32 unless you enjoy causing trouble. Michael.

Come on Michael, Fat32 is not that bad....well at least I havent heard or read anything about it indicating any problems.....to me, it should have been available years ago......but thats another swipe at ms....I assume it wont be long before an updated version of FIPS is available that will support Fat32.....even though ms wont release any specs, look at NTFSDOS...snigger snigger BTW, how is the new user group coming along? While there isn't anything bad about FAT32, what is bad, is that I beleive that you have to sign a NDA to get the specifications, which rules Linux out of it (unless we distribute only the binaries). > BTW, how is the new user group coming along? I have just seen an announcement that a new version of fips is now available - fips15b as a zip file which now DOES SUPPORT FAT32. I downloaded FIPS15B and partitioned my disk. But when it finishes it doesn't return to dos command. The error is "can't load command"(??? I can't remember exactly), "memory allocation error, system halted"(???) But it did partitioned my disk. The problem happens when I restart my computer and windows can't work. The error is: "while initializing device VFBACKUP: VFBACKUP could not load vfd.vxd. Please run set up again." So I ran setup again and again and again. I even formatted the new partition and copied all my files to that partition( it took quite some time and long filenames disappeared). The same error repeated. Eventually I rename "windows" directory to "win". This time it worked. FIPS doesn't partition as I expected. I deleted many files trying to get the second partition before 1024th cyliner (504M). "defrag" was used. But still fips requested me to input the second partition starting cylinder around 1.0G(9xxM). Now I have 1.0g partition under linux and 2.0g under win95 (I install win95 on the second partition not the first!!) By the way, how large should each partition under linux be? I am using slackware. Do I need a big /usr? Or I can mount /usr/local as a separate partition? Bo

Having just written to Jason to ask him where to find it, I found it all by myself. 8-) However, it seems its support for FAT32 is not universal. Here's what I found at http://bmrc.berkeley.edu/people/chaffee/fat32.html Quoting the author, Gordon Chaffee: " Fips is a program to non-destructively resize a FAT partition. I have done an update to fips to support FAT32. However, it still does not support partitions marked with type 0xC, 0xE, or 0xF. All of these partition type use Logical Block Addressing (LBA). LBA allows the BIOS to address disks over 8GB. A partition type of 0xC is a FAT32 partition that uses Logical Block Addressing (LBA). A partition type of 0xE is a FAT16 partition that uses LBA. A partition type of 0xF is a FAT16 partition that uses LBA but is less than 32MB. " Cheers, Ian S. P.S. fips15b.zip is available as a link on the above page. Yes, quite sure. I did the same thing, and surely from a boot floppy. So, let me repeat it: fips15B fails on my system exactly the same way. The result is a corrupt win/95 system. Quite nasty. Anyone know how to fix windows? So, warning to everyone else: don't use fips15b unless you are absolutely sure that you can stomach a dead windows.
