ELF, Should I move ??

I am tossing to upgrade my 1.2.13 to become ELF-aware or not.
Should I upgrade now or wait until 1.3 is released??
Is it easy to upgrade to ELF? dangerous? Do I have to setup everything again?
I am a bit reluctant here because it took me quite a while last time to set it up
and I have forgotten what i have done...

thanks for your comment..

1.3.* is out, has been for a while

no

yes

if your upgrade is successful, you hopefully won't have to re-setup much

I used the ELF-howto to upgrade, then used that for a few weeks before I realized I'd
just have to give up and reinstall a full ELF system. Not that my system wasn't usable,
just that maintaining two sets of libraries was difficult.

My suggestion to you is back up all your important data and configuration files and
make a clean install of a complete ELF system.

Yeah, we're up to 1.3.90 already!

The best way to do it is to back everything up (don't forget /etc/passwd
and /var/X11R6/lib/XF86Config etc.), wipe the partitions and install
an ELF distribution like Slackware 3.0 which includes gcc-2.7.0, which
can "do ELF". The kernel supplied is 1.2.13-elf.

I did this, and have since moved up to 1.3.89 (1.3.90 tomorrow!) without
changing anything else (except procps-0.97 to 0.99 and installing
modules-1.3.57).

Go for it.

Mark.

It wasnt hard on my 1.3 system . Took 5 minutes. On a system that I do
not have any compilers on it took less time.

Only if you stuff installing the new dual format ld.so support. Its
just as dangerous as upgrading libc.so on a live system.

I didnt reinstall anything other than the libraries, only slowly as
I get new applications or upgrade old ones are things converting to ELF,
most of my systems are running, quite happly a.out binaries.

Huh? 1.3 was released at the same time as 1.2! Just as 1.1 was
released at the same time as 1.0. There won't be any more 1.x
releases, the next releases will be 2.0 and 2.1. Since version 1 was
declared the differnce is that x.odd releases are for people who feel
comforatable debugging kernels and x.even releases are for other
people.

So the question is: "Do *you* feel comfortable debugging kernels?"
