I've had mine lock up at more or less the same point. I got rid of /etc/rc.d and it just quit after adding swapspace. I got swap out of my /etc/fstab, and it just quit after "VFS: Mounted root (ext2...." I later (after hitting the problem twice (and reinstalling to get rid of it twice)) realized that it would lock up like this only after I shutdown from someplace other than the console (like a telnet session on a win95 box here in the soho lan, or an xterm). Is it right that you can't shutdown from anywhere but the console? BTW, When my boot sequence locked up, I could still log in from a non-console terminal. Maybe you can do that. The problem is that if I did that, my machine thought that the terminal I logged in at was the console! Really wierd. It would try to treat that terminal (a telnet session from win95) as the console! After I logged in over telnet, the console would show a login prompt, but if you logged in, the console would be treated as a terminal! Just $.02 that I hope will contribute to figuring it out.
