It's created at boot time by /etc/rc.d/rc.S

No it uses the SVGA X-server there is a VGA X-server that works with most
EGA or VGA hardware but only in 16 colours.

: I there some kind of 'sysinfo' utility in the version I have, or is one
: available? The PC I'm using is a 386-sx laptop with a Cyrix 486 upgrade.
: I am 'enabling' the 486 in dos before loading Linux, but I want to check
: that it is still enabled after Linux is loaded.

Just use more /proc/cpuinfo

: I know the floppy drive is /dev/fd1, but how do I access files from floppy?
: At the moment I'm having to copy the files to hd under DOS, then load
: Linux. I assume there is an easier way!

You can either mount /dev/fd0 /mount_point -t msdos or use mtools

: TIA. Cheers,
