It just all went horribly wrong. I'd been playing round with unmaskirq on the hard drives of my "sound server" to reduce recording over-runs, and it fried the disk. The really silly part is I had a working NFS link to my main box, and could have probably easily fixed it. However, I did the silly thing, and rebooted. It's a bad sign when you get prompted to set timezone, on bootup, especially when it's not in any of the startup scripts... Now it won't come up at all, and I've no boot device on the system, and the hard drive won't read on my main machine, due to some reason. Argh. Thinking about it, in this situation is there a way to remount the NFS mount, as the root filesystem? cd /nfs;chroot . bash works sort-of, but not quite. And why might remount -n -o remount,ro / fail, saying "/ is busy" ... ? -- Ian Stirling.
