I had a similar problem with my IDE CD-ROM when I assembled my
machine. The drive is a Goldstar GCD-R540B and the line I put in
/etc/fstab is

/dev/hdc /cdrom iso9660 ro,block=2048,user,noauto,nosuid,noexec

i.e. a 2k blocksize was required. Without this, the first time I ran
'ls' in a directory I only saw some of the filenames, but all of them
appeared when 'ls' was run again.

Cheers
Richard
