Heh, prepare for a looong but interesting read of a thread about Linux
inside the USENET group comp.os.minix titled "LINUX is obsolete" :

http://groups.google.com/group/comp.os.minix/browse_thread/thread/c25870d7a41696d2/

Andy Tanenbaum started this thread called "LINUX is obsolete", but
formally no-one knows why. Keep in mind that Linux basicly was started and
programmed on a minix computer, but minix in itself was only allowed as a
study object and not for commercial pusposes. The legal paperwork was
fiddled in somewhere inside the sale of a book on Minix which included a
set of floppies by Prentice Hall. 6 months after Linus has announced his
Linux project on comp.os.minix it had already started to snowball. I think
that Tanenbaum during the christmas holidays also had noticed this, and
posted a message on Jan 29, 1992 on comp.os.minix titled "LINUX is
obsolete".

Very soon Tanenbaum figured out that this attempt to kill the
Linux genie, which had left the bottle, was only backfiring at
himself and minix.

Cheers,

Robert
