Running Linux on a PC I thought it would be nice to have
the same kernel boot message I have it on the Sun SPARC
(i.e. --> THE PENGUIN LOGO <-- ), and of course better
fonts on the consoles :)
In the kernel documentation I found some docu about the frame
buffer device, which is supported on PC with some vesa driver.
The resulting .config-file (from menuconfig) looks like this:
....
#
# Console drivers
#
# CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE is not set
CONFIG_VIDEO_SELECT=y
CONFIG_FB=y
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE=y
# CONFIG_FB_VGA is not set
CONFIG_FB_VESA=y
CONFIG_VIDEO_SELECT=y
# CONFIG_FB_MDA is not set
# CONFIG_FB_VIRTUAL is not set
# CONFIG_FBCON_ADVANCED is not set
CONFIG_FBCON_CFB8=y
CONFIG_FBCON_CFB16=y
CONFIG_FBCON_CFB32=y
# CONFIG_FBCON_FONTWIDTH8_ONLY is not set
CONFIG_FBCON_FONTS=y
# CONFIG_FONT_8x8 is not set
# CONFIG_FONT_8x16 is not set
CONFIG_FONT_SUN8x16=y
CONFIG_FONT_SUN12x22=y
# CONFIG_FONT_6x11 is not set
# CONFIG_FONT_PEARL_8x8 is not set
# CONFIG_FONT_ACORN_8x8 is not set
...
Now, I can boot, but all I see is the booting message (NO logo), and
then nothing more. The system seems to be working, but there is no more
console output. I tried the lilo option vga=ask, which detects some
VESA card, but it does not give me any of the resolutions mentioned
in the ./Documentation/fb/vesafb.txt. Using that resolution IDs results
in
an "I don't know that mode"-message. Scan also does nothing
appropriate. I can switch from 80x25 to 80x30, 80x60 (extremly ugly
:)...,
but this is nothing the frame buffer device is used for.
Is there some configuration error, do I have to make some changes
in the Makefile (-> the -SVGA-option) or what is wrong here?
BTW: I have a ELSA Winner 2000/office AGP which states to be VESA
compatible but is said to be not :)
Any ideas are welcome
TIA
Nicolas
