Having had a quite bit of fiddling around in an attempt to get the full
1600x1200 pixel display working properly with GLX on my Toshiba Laptop, I
thought I'd pass on the information as a brief HOWTO.
Download the NVidia driver and GLX module package from the NVidia web site
at "http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_archive". The package is
upgraded from time to time. At present (June 2003) this is driver release
number 1.0-4363.
To quote from the package README: "Driver release 1.0-4363 introduces a new
packaging and installation mechanism, which greatly simplifies the
installation process. There is only a single file to download:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run. This contains everything previously
contained by the old NVIDIA_kernel and NVIDIA_GLX packages."
Once you have downloaded the file, change its permissions so that it can be
executed, then run it as root.
My distribution (Slackware 9.0) was unlikely to have had pre-compiled
drivers, so I said "no" to that option and then decided on the following
option which was for onsite compilation and installation of the modules.
(You will need to have C compiler and kernel includes available.)
A sample XF86Config file is supplied in /usr/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0 after the
installation, however I opted to adapt an XF86Config file which I obtained
over the net about six months ago. I am indebted to the original author from
the UK whose name I have accidentally lost.
It is important to ensure that the line:
Option "IgnoreEDID" "True"
be retained, otherwise the EDID parameters will restrict your display to
1400 x 1050. This was one of the time-consuming problems that held me up
till I realised what was causing it.
Regards,
Jack.
