Actually, I remember lecturing about position-independent code for my
class in systems software at Purdue University in 1972.  So, ELF is a very
old idea, and I know that I was one of the early ones to propose it. 

Everyone who writes about ELF keeps saying that ELF slows you down a few
percent.  Not necessarily.  If you make the convention that the base
address is stored in a _memory_ location known symbolically to the
compiler and brought in as needed, then your compiler's optimizer can do
flow analysis and re-use the ELF base register when needed.  That point
was developed in 1972 also. So what else is new?
