Hi, I'm running Redhat7.0, and I'm trying to get Creative Sound Blaster Live! to work. Using manual kernel module manipulations (lsmod, rmmod, depmod -a, modprobe) I can get the drivers to load and "work" fine except for one "little" thing: the actual sound isn't coming out of the speakers. For the record: it works under Windows. Under linux, the system beep works too. When I had Redhat6.2 on this machine, I tried getting the latest emu10k1 driver, even recompiling the kernel as advised - to the same effect. Is it possible that the driver sends the sound to the wrong device / IRQ or something? It doesn't give any error messages. Thanks in advance! I assume you downloaded the stuff from http://opensource.creative.com/
and followed the instructions there.
I had a similar problem, but as it turned out it was a matter of the
volume control panel. Playing with it switched it on - eventually.

Compile the little dm utility (it came with the emu10k1 drivers from creative, in the utils subdirectory). Then execute "dm unmute" and then "dm 75" (or anything large enough up to 100). Now try playing with kmix. Good luck Pawel

I downloaded the latest driver, libs and utils, did "configure" and "make install" for each of them, yet when I run amixer it says: "The ALSA sound driver was not detected in this system." What can be wrong? Is it OK that I don't have the /dev/snd directory? Thanks in advance! Wroot Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

Hi, Yes, I am running an SMP machine. I tried booting in linux-up (losing one CPU), but when I run "amixer", I get the same error: "The ALSA sound driver was not detected in this system." as with other kernels. BTW, are there sound cards supported by SMP kernels? I should probably demand that Dell people send me a new sound card (they sold us this pre-installed Linux box) Thanks! Hello, What model card do you have? Some have a shared analog/digital outputs which aren't support yet. If you have digital speakers this may be your problem. So far that we know of, these models are have these types of outputs: -SBlive cards shipping with Gateway computers -All 5.1 cards do we need to add Dell? -- Daniel In article <8ueo86$55i$1@nnrp1.deja.com>, wroot@my-deja.com wrote: > Hi, > > I'm running Redhat7.0, and I'm trying to get Creative Sound Blaster > Live! to work. What can be : wrong? Is it OK that I don't have the /dev/snd directory? That doesn't exist. The device files you need are made by a utility that alsa supply (called snddevices?). What you need is to load the drivers. If you don't want to do it by hand, you have to edit conf.modules and let the kmod daemon do it for you. It sounds like you need to read the instructions again! Here is an appropriate module structure (minus the oss stuff) snd-ens1371 8808 0 snd-pcm 28000 0 [snd-ens1371] snd-timer 7304 0 [snd-pcm] snd-rawmidi 8152 0 [snd-ens1371] snd-seq-device 2796 0 [snd-rawmidi] snd-ac97-codec 22256 0 [snd-ens1371] snd-mixer 22180 0 [snd-ens1371 snd-ac97-codec] snd 32504 0 [snd-ens1371 snd-pcm snd-timer snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device snd-ac97-codec snd-mixer] soundcore 2040 6 [snd] And here is the conf.modules business that corresponds: # ALSA sound settings alias char-major-116 snd # ALSA portion alias snd-card-0 snd-card-ens1371 # OSS/Free portion alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 # card #1 alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss Peter
