I've put a new 2.0.36 based tomsrtbt-1.7.0 up on http://www.toms.net/rb/.
Later I'll also load it to Sunsite's Incoming to go into system/recovery.

It's a boot/root rescue/emergency floppy image with more stuff than can fit.
Bzip2, 1722Mb formatting, and tight compilation options helped jam a lot on.

It is useful for "learn unix on a floppy" as it runs from ramdisk, includes
the man-pages for everything, and behaves in a generally predictable way.

Enhancements since 1.6.0 include:

New:
chgrp, clear, date, false, fdflush, length, losetup, mknod, touch, true, rshd,
nc, telnet(fake), ile(shell command history - whoo-hoo!), ntfs.o, tulip.o,
3c59x, fdformat, 21 keytables for loadkeys, BusLogic.o, IDEPCMCIA option,
gnu-mt, cardbus, enhanced-Colburn-pax/tar/cpio

Improved:
/bin/login(fake), wc tee dirname head cut egrep -> awk,

Removed:
mkdmsdosfs, fsck, fsck.minix, smc-ultra32, rlogin, superformat, bsd-mt-st,
aha152x_cs, gnu-cpio

Upgraded:
util-linux-2.8, pcmcia-3.0.5

LSM, FAQ including feature list, and available add-ons follow:

---------------------------- tomsrtbt-1.7.0.lsm --------------------------:

Title: tomsrtbt
Version:	1.7.0
Entered-date:	17NOV98
Description:	"The most Linux on one floppy." (distribution or panic disk).
1.72MB boot/root rescue disk with a lot of hardware and tools.
Supports ide, scsi, tape, network adaptors, PCMCIA, much more.
About 100 utility programs and tools for fixing and restoring.
See tomsrtbt.FAQ for a list of stuff that is included. Not a
script, just the diskette image packed up chock full of stuff.
Easy to customize startup and scripts for complete rebuilding.
Also good as learn-unix-on-a-floppy as it has mostly what you
expect- vi, emacs, awk, sed, sh, manpages- loaded on ramdisks.
There is one installer that runs under Linux, another for DOS.

15) ToDo

1) What is tomsrtbt?

"The most Linux on one floppy disk" for:

		rescue recovery panic & emergencies

tools to keep in your shirt pockets

whenever you can't use a hard drive

Bzip2, 1722Mb formatting, and tight compilation options helped jam a lot on.
I also look for small versions of tools- i.e., mnsed is 13K, gnu-sed is 53K.

2) What are the design goals?

as much stuff as possible on 1 floppy disk

keep it self contained, build under itself

try to make it behave like a normal system

rescue and recovery functions get priority

3) What is on it?

Stuff included- modules, manpages, links, scripts, binaries, kernel:

4) What are the files in the Linux package?

buildit.s create it
clone.s duplicate it
fdflush flush floppy cache
fdformat format floppy 1.7M
install.s Install it
settings.s used by scripts
tomsrtbt.FAQ documentation
tomsrtbt.lsm Linux Software Map
tomsrtbt.raw		<== This is it
unpack.s unload it

5) What are the files in the DOS package?

initrd.img Linux root image that installs tomsrtbt
install.bat Install it
loadlin.exe Starts linux system from DOS
tomsrtbt.FAQ documentation
zimage Linux kernel for install only

6) How do I customize it?

To customize startup, edit rc.custom.gz on the floppy, i.e.,

  a) mount /dev/fd0u1722 /fl
  b) gzip -dc < /fl/rc.custom.gz > /tmp/rc.custom
  c) vi /tmp/rc.custom
  d) gzip -c < /tmp/rc.custom > /fl/rc.custom.gz
  e) umount /fl

Typical uses: insmod, ifconfig, route, resolv.conf, hosts, mount, etc.

For full customization, such as adding modules, new keymaps, etc...

(Be logged somewhere with 10+ meg of linux filesystem space)

	unpack.s	# unbuilds it into 1/ & 2/
			# do what thou wilt
	buildit.s	# rebuilds it from 1/ & 2/

There is lots of space, delete dmsdos or ce or other useless stuff.

If you have any problems with the scripts, try running them while booted in
tomsrtbt instead of under your system. They are only proven to work thusly.

NOTE:	You need space to DO the customizations. Rc.custom.gz can be
unpacked into /root, edited, gzipped, copied back. Buildit.s
needs drive space. If you only have FAT, use the loop device.

8) Contact and support

	There's a mailing list, tomsrtbt@toms.net, send
	mail 'subscribe tomsrtbt' to majordomo@toms.net

You can get the mailing list archives via email

	The homepage is http://www.toms.net/rb/

	My email address is Tom@Toms.NET

I am not a Unix teacher! Questions should be tomsrtbt-specific!

9) How do I install it under Linux?

a) extract the .tar.gz archive
b) Be root
c) Be in the tomsrtbt-<version> directory
d) Have a blank floppy with no bad sectors
e) Do './Install.s'

The script assumes you have ELF and that your 3.5" 1.44M floppy is on fd0.
If you have an a.out system, you can still use it, but you'll have to have
'fdformat' from the util-linux package and do it manually. I included the
ELF binary here. You have to use fdformat, it won't fit on in 1.44 MB.
As far as I can tell, all 1.44 drives support 1.722 just fine. The script
uses mknod to create /dev/fd0u1722 if you don't have it already.

If you use libc.so.6 / glibc, you might need something like:
 LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/i486-linux-libc5/lib; ./fdformat /dev/fd0H1722

Let me know what problems you have and what features you would like added.

10) How do I install it under DOS

a) Pkunzip it the DOS installer, tomsrtbt-<version>.dos.zip

b) If you are running Windows-95, do "shutdown and restart in msdos mode".
You have to be in really-DOS mode. Not a DOS session under Windows-95.

c) CD to the directory you pkunzipped it into.

d) Run the "install.bat" file. Follow prompts to create the diskette.

This is for installing tomsrtbt when you don't already have Linux.

If you already have tomsrtbt on a floppy, don't use this, and if
you already have Linux, don't use this. Use the normal archive.

If there are any questions, I can be reached at Tom@Toms.NET.

11) Misc tips

Use "man command" if a command acts strangely

"snarf" does ftp, gopher, http, & finger

/ is full. /usr is full. /tmp & /root have room

tar and cpio are both implemented with pax and differ from gnu-tar and gnu-cpio

To run programs from your hard drive:
-ELF libc5 stuff should all work.
-For a.out programs, install binfmt_aout.o, mess with libraries.
	-For glibc6 programs, something like:
		ln -s /mnt/lib/ld-linux.so.2 /lib/ld-linux.so.2
edit ld.conf.so then ldconfig or maybe LD_LIBRARY_PATH
or, "chroot <mounted glibc root> bash" then whatever...

Command history is done by ile from /bin/login, read "man ile", see /bin/login.

Most network drivers are modules; use insmod and edit rc.custom.gz.

If you need something missing, look in http://www.toms.net/rb/add-ons/.

Try "pcmcia start". If you add pcmcia modules, fix /etc/pcmcia/config also.

To use lilo, mount the floppy to get at zImage & boot.b, chain.b is in etc.
The lilo you run must have the same version as the boot.b it runs against.

wc login man shutdown ps hexdump telnet tee & head are scripts or awks.

See the /etc/inittab to enable rshd or dialin or 'telnetd'.

For the fake telnetd, use 'mode character' and 'set binary'...

13) Will it run with 4 meg

Nearly 8M is used for the kernel, ramdisks, and bunzip2ing.

A 4M machine boots with only the / ramdisk, and 300K free.

You can get at /usr even with 4M by following this procedure:

1) Use fdisk to make partitions sized ~1M, ~4M, ~8M.
2) Mount /dev/fd0H1722 on /mnt
3) . /mnt/settings.s # sets O1, O2
4) dd if=/dev/ram0 of= ~1M
5) Reboot with root= ~1M
6) Mkswap & swapon the ~8M
7) mkfs.minix the ~4M
8) mount the ~4M on /usr
9) dd if=/dev/fd0H1722 skip=$O2 | bzip2 -ds | cpio -imd

Then you'll have everything and can proceed at will...

14) Copyright etc.

Almost the only originality is arrangement, construction, and scripts.

I changed 'mnsed 1.1', fixing 'l' and adding 'L' to do a hexdump.
I changed 'snarf' to do USER and PASS in ftp via the environment.
I changed 'busybox' taking out about half the applets, shrinking.
I changed 'ile' fixing controlling ttys and high8-bit characters.
I changed 'pax' ( = tar = cpio ) changing defaults and adding -V.
The .diffs are in http://www.toms.net/rb/add-ons/*.diff.gz.

'miterm' is thanks to Robert de Bath, rd103925@mayday.cix.co.uk

Everything else is on sunsite.unc.edu, tsx-11.mit.edu, ftp.debian.org,
or is in the usenet comp.source.unix archives volume 25 on ftp.lth.se.
