Owplaces/Xtoolplaces? in SW 3.0?

I am running Slackware 3.0 Linux. I have installed X11 with Xview. I am starting X with "openwin". According to the Man page, "openwin" looks for .openwin-init which is created by owplaces. According to the Man page, "owplaces" is a script which calls "xtoolplaces". Although, I have a man page for xtoolplaces, I do not have a binary. I checked sunsite.unc.edu and tsx-11.mit.edu and neither have xtoolplaces, although sunsite constained a patch to xtoolplaces. From the patch information, I followed the link to a internet site (I forget at the moment which) with xtoolplaces source. I tried to compile the code (GCC 2.7.2) as ELF with no luck. 1) Does xtoolplaces binary exist in Slackware 3.0 (Did I miss it somewhere?) 2) Does anyone have a working binary version of xtoolplaces for Linux (i386)? 3) Does anyone know how to compile the xtoolplaces source with GCC? Thanks Chris Stevens cas@tecnet1.jcte.jcs.mil

Yes.
However, it's just a shell script (I'll append mine below), and you
can make it an empty executable file if you like.
It is used twice:
(1) when you use olwm's `save workspace' menu, it is written out,
containing a ine for each X client that was running and tht had
registered a startup command line with the X property manager;
(2) it's read on startup to get those utilities running that were there
when you last did Save Workspace.
If you edit .xinitrc instead, you don't need .openwin-init, so just make
it an empty file. Make it executable (chmod +x .openwin-init), though.

In what follows, I have noted some items as ##@@ that differ for Linux.
#!/bin/sh
# .openwin-init - OpenWindows initialization script.
# WARNING: This file is automatically generated.
# Any changes you make here will be lost!
export DISPLAY
IFS=.
SETBASEDISPLAY() { BASEDISPLAY=$1; }
SETBASEDISPLAY ${DISPLAY}
IFS=
SETDISPLAYSCREEN() {
DISPLAY=${BASEDISPLAY}.$1
if winsysck x11 ; then
:
else
echo No display available for screen $1
exit 1

##@@ Linux users: svenv is for SunView uses -- SPARC only;
##@@ if you are running Linux on a PC with no SunView support,
##@@ comment out the next line entirely:
eval `svenv -env`
}
# Note: toolwait is a utility to control client startup.
# For more information, see the toolwait(1) man page.
#
# Start clients on screen 0
#
SETDISPLAYSCREEN 0
#
##@@ the next line starts up filemgr.
toolwait filemgr -Wp 0 120 -Ws 590 300 -WP 0 0 +Wi -c -i 5
##@@ and an xterm
toolwait xterm
##@@ end

I just caught this on a linux related newsgroup. This may be of help to you but I have not verified this information personnally (even though I use openwin under Linux, I never use the save workspace feature because it usually never does exactly what you want, on Sun's or PC's alike): ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi, "owplaces" calls xtoolplaces, which is missing on Slackware 3.0. I downloaded my ready-to-use copy from: ftp.suse.de in /pub/November95/xtoolplaces/ file: xtoolplc.tgz Regards, Claus >Thanks >Chris Stevens >cas@tecnet1.jcte.jcs.mil -- ,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-,._.,-*~'`^`'~*-, Vincent S.
