WWW Servers for linux

Hi, netters;

We're looking into a possibility of using a Pentium PC with a large number
of disks as a WWW server to distribute various images. I would greatly
appreciate any advice or comments on the availability and ease of setup of
servers (both shareware and commercial) using linux. We're especially
interested in Netscape servers.

Thanx a lot.

Regards,

Nathan Platt.

I really recommend NCSA HTTPD 1.4 for Linux. I'v had this running for months
now without any trouble. Some say Appache is better but for now I'm not even
considering a change.

Nathan,

You might try out NCSA's latest version of httpd. Here's the 1st para
from the README file that comes w/ the distribution:

Documentation for httpd has been moved online. See the URL
<A HREF="http://hoohoo.ncsa.uiuc.edu/">here</A> for online hypertext
documentation including installation instructions, feature list,
demonstration, etc.

I have it on my linux box and it works fine. Also, I know from first hand
experience that it's used pretty widely in the government, too (whether
that's a plus or minus is up to you).

Anyway, good luck!

Another possibilty is Apache (http://www.apache.org/). Apache is intended
as a plug-in replacement for NCSA httpd, and is functinally equivalent. And
it's also free (definitely a Good Thing).

I'd go for Apache - there are some public domain SSL implementations
of it now which gives you the same security you have in the Netscape
Commerce Servers for free. I believe that
Apache is being more actively developed than NSCA server. I found
Apache installed really easily as well.

You might want to look into Spinner. It is small, extremely fast (compared
to NCSA HTTPd), and has a WWW-based configuration system. Information
can be found at http://spinner.infovav.se/

Spinner already has counters out of the box and much more. If you need features
get spinner. We are mirring it on ftp.fuller.edu:/mirror/spinner

I use CERN's httpd. It works well for my light load. It is available
free from on www.w3.org. I am thinking about changing to either NCSA
or Apache to play with SSL support. (free SSL is available for
non-commercial use).

I'm quite happy with Spinner (see http://spinner.infovav.se/). It is
incredibly easy to configure (you don't hack around in configuration files
but have a nice configuration interface via your favourite WWW-Browser) and
has high performance. And it doesn't fork, so it causes a much smaller load
than most of the other servers.

The only problem is: it is still in beta. Although it is quite stable and
has usually all features you need, there are some problems with the finer
details. For instance if you use it as a proxy with cache, there is no way
to say "don't cache this domain." You should give it a try, though.

Greetings,

Haps

I have a warm feeling about the current 1.5 release, it is a bit
faster, knows how to prefork in Linux without patches, and I got
compilation errors out of Apache (possibly due to selection of
options).

Has anybody tried running webstone on linux?

I'm trying now to test various httpd's but webstone won't compile
on linux right... ok I fixed this, but now the webmaster don't want to
connect to webclient ... webclient works right because I tested it with
the irix webmaster... does anybody have a fix for this too?
If not I guess I'll have to dig in the code a little deeper...

Be careful with 1.5 under Linux... there has been a few cases of people
who ended up running it with root priviledges inadvertently. There seems
to be some sort of a problem before the child server gives up it's
priviledges.

There's a whole set of threads on comp.infosystems.www.servers.unix about it.

Did you ever think about running an http-server and a proxy-server
separately ? I am extremely impressed by the free Proxy Daemon named
"Harvest Cache". Unfortunately it has still problems resolving host-
names when accessing an ftp-link from an html-page, but I am sure
this will be fixed soon.

You should find the software somewhere on harvest.cs.colorado.edu.

I heard Rainer talking about a very fast proxy server that is even
faster than Netscapes product. Is it this ?

Which version are you running ? Which is the newest, where you assume,
that the bux will be fixed ?

Is that proxy server able to talk to another proxy ? Would be an
advantage over Netscapes proxy ...

I don't know Net$cape products. I don't use Linux to buy a commercial sourceless
product. But Harvest is really incredibly fast (and a bit buggy because the code
is quite... careless).

It was made to be integrated in an hierarchy of caches. Check:

Nice basic kit, but it appears to have some problems with option
negotiation between some OS's telnet and telnetd implementations. (Yes,
I've hacked it to work, but it's an *ugly* kludge and reduces some of
the options that are correctly honored.) I'm not yet sure if this is a
problem unique to running TIS under Linux or not...

Forgive me if I'm being repetitive by joining this thread late, but I was
wondering if anyone has setup Netscape Commerce Server on a Linux machine. I
would like to setup a server and NCS sounds pretty good. I assume I would get
the BSD binary (?) which could run if I have iBCS installed (?).

Anyway, any info anyone has on the subject would certainly be most
appreciated.

If the reason you're interested in Netscape's Commerce Server is the
security features, there is a free SSL extension to the free Apache
server. See http://arachnet.algroup.co.uk/Apache-SSL/ for how to get
it and what the restrictions are.

Apache's performance is very good under heavy use; HotWired uses it, for
example.

Why don't you try the Apache WWW server ?
It offers Multiple IP-Adresses end everything else what the CERN and NCSA provide.

We have a single client whose hits alone are 76,000 a day(and a
great many other clients and sites of our own) here at UltraPlex, and
Apache's working great with them. I shudder to think of having to use
cern...and of course with cern we couldn't do true virtual hosting.

Words of the Sentient:

I have spent all my life under a Communist regime, and I will tell you that a
society without any objective legal scale is a terrible one indeed. But a
society with no other scale but the legal one is not quite worthy of man
either. -- Alexander Solzhenitsyn
