Debian (Linux Distribution) install locations

Hi, I am a new user of Linux.

When I installed Debian which came with the option of installing msql -
a very old version of msql.

I wanted to 'uninstall' the old version before installing a new version.
Unfortanuately msql files seemed to be scattered all over my disk (just
by doing a 'find / -name msql*' ) so I gave up trying to find them all.
I've just installed a new version since buying 'the official guide to
msql 2.0'

Then I got Permission denied when running msqladmin as root - turns out
that version 1 daemon of msqld is still running.

Does anyone know where I can find doco on where these packages install
themselves? I want to do a clean uninstall of version 1 (or all
versions for that matter) and then re-install version 2.

Debian uses a packaging system, and keeps track of all this information for
you. You can either invoke "dselect" as root, find the appropriate package,
and set the options to purge it (purging removes all of the files it
installed). Alternately, you can use dpkg, like so:

 dpkg --purge <package name>

The package name is what debian sees the entire package as. Probably
"mysql", but check the listing dumped by:

 dpkg --get-selections

for anything that looks like your package. You can also see all of the
files that a specific package has installed by invoking dpkg once again:

 dpkg --listfiles <package name>

Package name has the same semantics as for the --purge switch.

I suggest you check the dpkg man page and debian documentation (try "info"
from the command line) for the bevy of other options the package manager
provides.

Hope this helps.

Respectfully,
Michael

All my life I wanted to be someone;
I guess I should've been more specific.

Log in as root and type:

  dpkg --purge msql msqld msql-doc

BTW:

"dpkg -l" will list the package that you currently have installed.
"dpkg -L msql" will list all of the files in the package named "msql"

"man dpkg" will tell you more about the dpkg program,

  http://www.debian.org/doc/FAQ/debian-faq-6.html

has more information on how the packaging system works.

To remove a package, use 'dpkg --remove'. Please note that in the upcoming
Debian 2.0 release, msql 2.0 is included so you might try to upgrade to it
instead.
