Hi, We'd like to be able to telnet to our PABX, which has the option of having a serial cable connected to it. We want to be able to connect a Linux box to it via a serial cable and telnet to the Linux box and connect to the PABX via the serial connection. Has anyone done this before, or does anyone know how to do it? TIA Andrew

I'd also delete all the modem setup and reset strings. connect the linux box to the PABX, and use minicom set to the right port and speed and so on and see if you can talk to the PABX. Once you have the linux box chatting to the the phone, you are set. Plug your linux box xinto whatever network you have that you are telnetting via, telnet to the linux boxx, and run minicom from your telnet session. minicom comes with the redhat distribution. Zebee

I think you have the terminology wrong. The pabx supports a serial
console or terminal on an RS-232 port. Thats not the same as a telnet.
The good news is if you link a null-modem cable to the pabx and then to a
spare serial port you will be able to telnet to the linux box and run
something like minicom to access the pabx.
I've done similar with a router.

Or at least have it run automatically from the .login or .profile script for that "pabx" user-id if it started up one of the more common bin/*sh programs. The second way is probably better because the /bin/*sh would first work out the terminal type & size of the inbound telnet session. i.e. vt100, vt220, xterm, 24x80, etc. To call minicom, I'd use an 'exec /path/to/minicom' as this will cause the 'minicom' process to replace the /bin/*sh process, and the user exits minicom, there will be no shell to return to for hacking.
