Man, you people downunder! 8-)
In article <33308CB0.170C@niw.cerberus.navy.gov.au> you wrote:

Sure - you have an interrupt conflict!
: I am using a Linux box as an Internet gateway for a LAN and some dial-in
: lines. The box has two internal 14.4kbps modems and one external 28.8
: kbps modem. Two lines are for dialling in and on to dial out to the
: ISP.
The two 14.4s are on /dev/ttys0 and /devttys1 right?
: If I use one of the 14.4 kbps modems to dial the ISP I get a download
: speed of around 1000-1300 bytes/sec. I think this is pretty
: reasonable. However, when I try to use the 28.8 kbps modem to dial the
: ISP (preferable) the download speed drops to between 100-200 bytes/sec!
: ie, about 10 times SLOWER :-(
And your 28.8 is on /dev/ttys2 right?
: I think it must be the serial card, but it is a new serial card with
: 16550 UARTS. I have tried configuring it at boot time with:
:
: setserial /dev/cua1 irq 3 autoconfig
: setserial /dev/cua1 irq 3 autoconfig spd_hi and
: setserial /dev/cua1 irq 3 autoconfig spd_vhi
Ok, I'm wrong 8-)
If you read the Serial-HOWTO 8-)!
Quick version -
COM1 of DOS PC is - /dev/cua0 or /dev/ttys0
Address 0x03F8
Interrupt 4
COM2 of DOS PC is - /dev/cua1 or /dev/ttys1
Address 0x02F8
Interrupt 3
COM3 of DOS PC is - /dev/cua2 or /dev/ttys2
Address 0x03E8
Interrupt 4 - Oopps Conflict with COM1
COM4 of DOS PC is - /dev/cua3 or /dev/ttys3
Address 0x02E8
Interrupt 3 - Oopps Conflict with COM2
Linux prefers individual interrupts on high speed ports - so does DOS it
just starts ingoring the one that is not as busy (reason for mouse dieing
if you have a conflict in Winders). Just change the interrupt for the
COM3 and COM4 ports (usually a jumper but in Plug-n-Pray use the software)
to something else 5 is good - unless you have a SoundBlaster board or two
printers.
: but it is always the same.
If you use a serial mouse, and three modems, you are basically out of
ports on the PC arch. You might do better to get a 4-port board and
ALWAYS use EXTERNAL modems - they may cost more but they WORK ANYWHERE
even on my old ADM-3+ terminal.
: Thanks, Ian.
Have a Foster's(or insert favorite beverage) on me 8-)
