Hi, sorry to ask the age-old question again, but I am after
some advice about which Linux distribution would be best suited
to a machine being setup as a Web Server and internet gateway.
I would appreciate comments or suggestions from anyone who has
setup a similar system using either Debian or Red Hat Linux
(I would use latest versions). I have to pick between the two.
I am an experienced Linux user but I have only ever played with
Slackware distributions till now.
Thanks,
Chris.

I switched to Red Hat from Slackware when I upgraded my box
recently. The package stuff is pretty neat, but widgets for
adjusting the run levels, printing stuff etc. is a little
confusing. It probably doesn't help that I went from a 1.2.13
distribution of Slackware to Red Hat 4.0. I think the
layout of the directories changed quite a bit in the meantime.
I didn't look at Debian though. I couldn't tell you whether
it's any better than Red Hat. I'd recommend Red Hat over
Slackware though, mostly because installing the individual
packages is a lot easier, and upgrading to newer distributions
also looks easier.

Check out the unstable directories "web" section. If you are doing neither web development nor CGI on the machine, then both include apache and the distinctions are fewer. Though I find administering Debian remotely to be easier than Red Hat because Debian doesn't trash site-configured /etc files as easily. For the gateway part of your application, Debian includes diald, I haven't found diald for Red Hat yet :( -- Christopher J. If you don't have a particular program, FTP is as near as your Internet connection, and you have make and gcc to do the rest. :-) ...
