modules-1.2.8 make problem
#591

Hi Guys,
having problems trying to do a make with the modules-1.2.8.

Background: My final aim is to run the emumodule.o for dosemu-0.60.4
so, I've set CONFIG_MODVERSIONS within the kernel, and
compiled without problems. Now the reason why I got ahold
of modules-1.2.8 was that the Configure.help talking about
CONFIG_MODVERSIONS said that you needed genksyms. So thats
why I am working with modules-1.2.8.
I have recently gone over to elf, and have been running a
combined a.out and elf libraries without too many problems.

    What I have done:
the kernel I am using is 1.2.13, and having looked at the file
vital-patch-for-linux-1.2.8 and compared it against the files
module.c and ppp.c, by 1.2.13 they seem to already have been patched
in the way that modules-1.2.8 is expecting. No worries.
    What is happening:
I go into the /usr/wrc/modules-1.2.8 directory and do a make or
make install. The insmod and genksyms sections go without a problem,
when we get to depmod I get the error message
modprobe.c
modprobe.c: In function `void verbose(const char * ...)':
modprobe.c:22: parse error before `('
modprobe.c: In method `int DEPEND::insmod(const chat *, class NODE **, char **)':
and then it goes on a bit and stops.
I thought the problem was something to do with the fact that I had gone
to elf, so I went into each subdirectory underneath modules-1.2.8 and edited
each Makefile so that each occurrence of gcc, or cc had -b i486-linuxaout on it
but still no help.

At the end of the day all I need for CONFIG_MODVERSIONS to work is
genksyms, and that is fine, but I wanted to resolve this problem with depmod
as I am having no success with loading emumodule.o so I wanted to get this
problem resolved before I start to tackle the dosemu one.

Please email replies to gdave@doh.health.nsw.gov.au, that is my work address.
When I get an answer to this problem I will post a solution.

Many Thanks
Graham Daveney

This is actually a problem with modprobe.c (line 21, though): a semicolon is missing
after 'va_end(list)'. You may also have trouble with the new for-variable scoping
conventions in gcc-2.7.0(?). Any variable declared like 'for(int i=...' is not
visible outside the for loop (due to a change in the C++ standard). If this gives
you trouble, move the 'int i' outside the for loop and replace it with the usual
'for(i=...'.

Also, you may want to try

   ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux/sources/sbin/modules-1.3.57.tar.gz

or

   ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/Incoming/modules-1.3.57.tar.gz (may have moved)

But I'm uncertain about the kernel requirements for using this package.

Hope this helps,

This is a very simple syntax error. Just put a ";" in the end of the
previous line (21) and it will compile ok.

Get "modules-1.3.57.tar.gz" from sunsite, tsx-11 or my web-page.
You can use everything but the kerneld-patch from that release
on a 1.2-kernel.

Good luck,
