Too many symlinks?
#602

I added a 1GB HD as the second drive on my system and moved the /usr directory
tree on to it. I also created symbolic links from /var/adm and other
directories which are normally linked (although I think /usr/adm was a link to
/var/adm rather than the (reverse) way I have it now). Anyway, when I boot up,
it says something along the lines of 'Too many symbolic links: /var/utmp'. I
haven't noticed any problems but I'd like to know how to get rid of this error
message.

Hooroo...

Gary.

This kind of error arises generally when resolving the symlink turns into
a loop...
Try:
	ln -s a b
	ln -s b a
	cat a
So try to lookup some loops...
The following should work (tested on SunOS):
	# find / -type l -exec head -0 {} \;
It should give an error for each unresolved link...

The filesystem has a limit on the number of times it will follow the redirection
of a symlink to prevent infinite loops. I don't know what this number is offhand
but it's high enough for most purposes. If I were you I would make sure that you
don't have a circular reference. I.e.

	/etc/utmp -> /var/adm/utmp
	/var/adm/utmp -> /etc/utmp
