What do I need to edit to get Make working again?

Hello,
last night I upgraded (sucessfully I think) to ELF.
I followed the ELF HOWTO and got through OK, apart from renaming
libc.so.4 to aout (thank God I had a boot disk, and was able to fix it!!!)
at 2.30 in the morning.
OK so everything works, but when I go to compile as a test, XDaliclock
and knews for example (both X11 apps) I get libraries not found in linking.
(these both went fine with gcc 2.5.8)
I ran ldconfig and all the directories are there in /etc/ld.so.conf
so that's OK.
When I look into a makefile generated by Imakefile, I see USRLIBDIR and
the like point to /usr/X11/lib/ not to the new directory that the HOWTO
told me to put all my libraries in - /usr/i486-linuxaout/lib
Editing the makefile of course is not the solution.
I am certain this is the problem. Am I correct?
If so, where is the file that determines these settings, and what else do I
need to do?
Please help!
I put off ELF long enough, realising something like this might happen.
At least this is better than Win95 - and worth it too!
Rachel

ELF version of XFree-3.1.2 has /usr/X11R6/lib/i486-linuxaout subdirectory for old a.out libs. You'd want to upgrade to this version of X to compile in ELF. Otherwise you'll have to edit Makefiles anyway, to set "-b i486-linuxaout" and "-m i386linux" flags to gcc and ld resp. You might as well edit the paths for your configuration, there's nothing wrong with that (usually :-). Just add "-L/usr/i486-linuxaout/lib" to ldflags. Dimitri
