I've tried for several weeks now to get linux running
on my 486 system. I've got adaptec's aha274x with a Fujitsu
disk but the 'scsi' kernel doesn't seem to work right. I've
tried both Red Hat and Slakware releases and as of Jan. 25 I
downloaded the boot and root images from a mirror site
(ftp.cc.gatech.edu) and the 'a' series and made a system
from these.

I,ve checkedhed and re-checked all the terminator and
switch stuff and my DOS and my SCO unix systems both seem
fine with this disk and host adaptor. But with linux it
is aways as follows:

No BIO32 extensions. Sorry, this relaese still depends on it.
AHA274x: warning : ignoring channel B of 2742 twin.
AHA274x: extended translation disabled

I log in as root
and since I've already built this thing for the
millionth time:

fdisk ... 'p' (print the partition map)

device	boot	begin	start	end	blocks	id	system
1 571 571	1032 63	GNU HURD
2 1	1	350 6	DOS 16-bit >32M
3 *	351	351	550	204800	83	Linux native
4 551	551	570 20480	82	Linux swap

mount /dev/sda3 /mnt
mount -t iso9660 -r /dev/scd0 (or whatever) /cdrom
mount
  says
/dev/fd0 on / type minix (rw)
/none on /proc type proc (rw)
  /dev/sda3 on /mnt type ext2 (rw)
  /dev/scd0 on /var/adm/mount type iso9660 (ro)

and then:

#ls /mnt/bin/ls
	ls
#ls /cdrom/bin/ls
        ls
#/var/adm/mount/ls /mnt/bin/ls
	ls
#/mnt/bin/ls /mnt/bin/ls
	/mnt/bin/ls not found
#cd /mnt/bin/ls
#./ls ls
        ./ls not found
#./ls
	./ls not found
#./sh
	./sh not found
#./'any other executable'
./'can't execute anything off this disk'

when booting lilo I get the lilo prompt but I can't
enter any text and so it boots DOS.

I've been able to define linux as the first partion
in lilo and then I get checksum errors when loading the
kernel or when the executing the .profile script I
can't execute the "color" executable called from said
script.

My conclusion is that this combo of disk and scsi host
adaptor doesn't work. I don't want to buy a new one.
This rig seems to work fine on DOS and SCO unix and
Windosw. My SCO stuff runs just fine but I don't want
it. I WANT to run linux. Perhaps someone could advise
me of how to make this set of hardware work.
