Speed tests between O/Ses on the same hardware are completely
meaningless, what you really need is a comparison, where you give each
team an amount of money, say $20,000, everything must be purchased at
retail, and must be legal (you need enough licence to cover all of the
workstations being used).  Because the Linux team doesn't need to buy
50 licences to handle 50 work stations, they can plough the difference
into a faster CPU (or more CPU's), more RAM, faster hard drives, more
SCSI channels, or whatever is else they need to get better performance.

You also have to remember, that Mindcraft got a pie in the face, when
it was discovered the original test was paid for by Microsoft, and that
they had an established history of having their customer win.  In order
to save face, they needed Microsoft to still win.  Microsoft still won,
the important thing isn't who wins in a test like this, it's what the
teams do with the results, what would the result be if the same test
were done today, with a stable 2.2 kernel.
