Boot Probe not seeing Ethernet card

I have linux (slackware ) installed on a Toshiba 5200 laptop, all
working fine except for the only reason for it existing - it will not
recognise the ethernet card, I have tried with a WD 8003 EP and an
NE2000 clone, which works on my other Linux box.
The system does not see the card on boot up, no error messages are
reported.
I have tried the ne2k diagnostic from Don Becker's site and that
reports the NE2000 correctly on IRQ 5 and 0x300 as set on the card.
Both of these cards work fine when booted on the Win3.11 system on
the same machine
Any ideas ?
