I wouldn't blame the 386 for being the slow end strait away, it could be
win95. I was getting pretty crappy transfers between a 386SX-16 running
Linux and a 486DX-33 running win 3.11. At first I thought it had to be the
poor old 386SX, but when I ran Linux on the 486, the performance increased
by about 30% !!!

Admittedly win95 is a different beast to win3.11 , but they are not that
different...
