Well since this previous post I can get the ISP's 'help menu'.
Previously I've modified my mail-client based on the RFC,
and like in the BBS days, macr-keys/simple-scripts will do the
 'by hand'.

Perhaps where I'm mistaken and will fail is that the mail-server
is not located at the login-site, so I DO need ppp.
Perhaps I'm thinking too much ito. BBSs ?

No. For 'security' it's standard that the password is not echoed.

No. Each ISP can use any OS. I'm guessing mine uses Novell ?
They just tell their clients how to login/connect.
It's not RFC determined.

No, if you're in a situation where you need a parachute, you don't
want advice to buy a chevrolet.
I've got adequate desktop client[s], but need a portable backup for
when my telco-line goes OO.

OK, that would fix another problem I've got:
a 486 notebook with Win3.1 installed which used to connect
nicely to an ISP, before W95 came out and the ISP said I had to
'upgrade to W95' [so I changed to linux].

Recently I looked into the old scripts of the Trumpet Winsock,
and found that they 'first login: ID & password' instead of the
'modern' first ppp then PAP. So I've been googling to get the
software [ppp & PAP] for Win3.1.

I think the previous/old Win3.1 setup used slip ?

Thanks,
