Stefan, My 3com cards were plug and play in SuSE 6.3 and 6.4... The model 509 that you specify sounds familiar to me however I cannot recollect my exact model numbers. Specifically, I have a 2year old PCMCIA 3com card in my Toshiba laptop (again, SuSE 6.3 was fully plug and play, including the graphics card). My PC has a 10mb 3com card (again, I cannot remember the exact model number)but it did plug and play (nope, I don't work for SuSE but the plug and play feel is one of the reason why I like them). I did find a small error whereby the SuSE machine could ping itself but see nobody else. I managed to change the network card it was using and from that point forward... it worked... If you have more than one Windoze PC, make sure you can ping one of the other as this will ensure you have TCP/IP installed. Do a properties on Network Neighbourhood and look in the window titled "The following network components are installed". You should have TCP/IP in there, if not, use the Add buttons to add it in as a Service. Secondly, ensure your Primary Network Logon is Network for Microsoft Windows. Make sure you apply IP addresses to them. I have my windows machines using IP 192.168.0.50 to 192.168.0.60 Use 255.255.255.0 as a subnet mask. Give the PCs a hostname and domain name. I will assume you are going to use win98.stony777.com okay? Do NOT put anything in the DNS fields as this might cause some confusion (once you have the machines talking to each other, then you can make little changes... that way you can always roll back). The windows machine is likely to reboot... When you have done this, go in to DOS and ping either another Windows machine, or else ping yourself. Ping 127.0.0.1 and if that responds, ping yourself using the IP address you configured (thus, from my example above, ping 192.168.0.50 okay?) Now... SuSE... I am currently looking at my SuSE 6.4 Yast screen. To configure the network 3com card, take the following Yast options from the menu System administration -> Integrate Hardware into system -> Configure networking device Network type is eth0 Networking device type on mine is set to 3c59x/3c90x Once you have set this, click Enter Yast menu again... Network configuration -> Network base configuration Press F5 for Device, select Ethernet. Select F6 for IP Address and enter an IP address (mine is 192.168.0.200 with subnet 255.255.255.0 which will work fine with the IP addresses I have specified above). DO NOT ENTER a gateway or anything else that might confuse the issue at this moment... you don't need them. The Device you just configured should be configured as Number 0 (on my version, it allows me to configure four cards, numbered zero to three, zero being the first). You need to enable it... Press F4 and an X will appear in the window on the row the device is described. Press F10 to Save your configuration. From the Yast Network Menu, choose the option "Change host name" and write in something like suse for the hostname and stony777.com for the domain. Press Enter until you move back to the Network Menu. From the Yast Network Menu, choose "Configure network services" and say yes at very least to the options that are described to enable telnet and ftp... if in doubt, say yes to all the prompts. Press ESC all the way out of Yast... Yast is likely to do its thing and configure the services. Linux, unlike windoze doesn't need to be rebooted... You can disable and re-enable networking services with # rcnetwork stop # rcnetwork start However... When installing a card, I prefer to reboot... When it comes up... have your windows machine ping the linux machine, by IP address... and versa vicea... That should work... If not... drop me a byte and if I can help, I will... while I have some HP Unix experience, I don't have extensive SuSE experience... but I will try... you can get me at rdusenet @ fiprojects.com good luck ;-) randell d. "Stefan Silberstein" <Stony777@T-Online.de> wrote in message news:39CB2538.5B934625@T-Online.de... Hello guys, I am new to Linux and it is hard for me to get through this SAMBA-stuff. I tried to connect to machines (1. SuSE Linux 7.0, 2. Win 98) with 3com509 Ethernet cards. The network-card in the Linux-machine is perfectly detected and Win 98 has it too. But I could need some help on setting up the connection in both PCs that they see one another. (I tried to configure the smb.conf, but it didnt help much. ANY advices is welcome. Stefan
