carrier errors on ethernet

What are "carrier" errors (from ifconfig)? I tried connecting to a switch
and also using a cross-over cable to another nic, and got the errors with
both setups. The NICs are DEC 21143s, everything setup and reporting as
100MB full duplex, but i still have the odd collision (see below) and slow
ftps. I seem to get a higher proportion of errors when i load the ethernet,
and throughput dies as well. tulip driver, mandrake 7, other machine on the
net is NT4.

tnx

This looks like a defected card.
Speciaclly when you have collisions in a FULL-DUBLEX environment thats in
normal operation impossible.
My guess is that the interface driver (hardware) on one of the NICS is
defected and generates unwanted signals and/or drops signals (wich is more
likely for the carrier error).

Try exchanging one of the crads with another. If it still happens swap the
digital cards and you will find the true defected card.
