Hi There, I have a linux RH5.2 server as as internet firewall running ip masquerade samba and diald, this is all working fine with 2 win95 machines sharing the modem on the server using dial on demand to my isp. The problem I have is that diald wont disconnect the connection after I have finished with the internet, I have noticed that there is a constant flash of the rcd light on the modem. So I looked into the packets that are being sent to my modem. I used tcpdump to view the packet infomation and log it to a file. here is a portion of the data. 17:03:19.729959 acay019125229.acay.com.au.1148 > job.acay.com.au.domain: 2300+ (41) 17:03:19.929959 job.acay.com.au.domain > acay019125229.acay.com.au.1148: 2300 1/4/4 (246) 17:03:19.929959 acay019125229.acay.com.au.1149 > job.acay.com.au.domain: 2301+ (45) 17:03:20.119959 job.acay.com.au.domain > acay019125229.acay.com.au.1149: 2301* 1/2/2 (169) 17:03:20.119959 acay019125229.acay.com.au.1150 > job.acay.com.au.domain: 2302+ (43) 17:03:20.299959 job.acay.com.au.domain > acay019125229.acay.com.au.1150: 2302* 1/2/2 (158) 17:03:20.299959 acay019125229.acay.com.au.1151 > job.acay.com.au.domain: 2303+ (45) 17:03:20.479959 job.acay.com.au.domain > acay019125229.acay.com.au.1151: 2303* 1/2/2 (175) 17:03:24.389959 new5202.acay.com.au > IGRP-ROUTERS.MCAST.NET: ip-proto-88 40 [tos 0xc0] 17:03:29.019959 new5202.acay.com.au > IGRP-ROUTERS.MCAST.NET: ip-proto-88 40 [tos 0xc0] 17:03:33.349959 new5202.acay.com.au > IGRP-ROUTERS.MCAST.NET: ip-proto-88 40 [tos 0xc0] 17:03:38.069959 new5202.acay.com.au > IGRP-ROUTERS.MCAST.NET: ip-proto-88 40 [tos 0xc0] 17:03:42.519959 new5202.acay.com.au > IGRP-ROUTERS.MCAST.NET: ip-proto-88 40 [tos 0xc0] 17:03:47.199959 new5202.acay.com.au > IGRP-ROUTERS.MCAST.NET: ip-proto-88 40 [tos 0xc0] 17:03:51.829959 new5202.acay.com.au > IGRP-ROUTERS.MCAST.NET: ip-proto-88 40 [tos 0xc0] 17:03:56.279959 new5202.acay.com.au > IGRP-ROUTERS.MCAST.NET: ip-proto-88 40 [tos 0xc0] As you can see it is coming from my isp acay.com.au, why is this happening and how can it be stopped, my diald program will not function and does not know when to terminate the link if there are constant packets being transmitted to my server. Is this a problem with my isp ? does anyone know what the packets mean ? and is it possible to filter them so diald will hang up the modem when i'm finished with the link. Yet another Question if thats ok, When I then have to terminate diald with exec /etc/rc.d/init.d/diald stop of just turn off the modem, about 5 minutes after that diald starts to reconnect again, is this the way it is supposed to work ? Then I have to turn the modem off again !! and again it tries to dial when I switch the modem back on ! The only way I can get it to listen without constantly dialing is by uninstalling the rpm and then reinstalling. All is fine untill I access the internet again and it wont hang up, then I go through the same problem again. I know this is alot to take in but would anyone with more expirence at this than me care to give me some advice, I really want this to work ! Thanks Rick Ashton. Thanks in Advance. Rick Ashton.

Hi, Ok I'm not the super-experienced kind of linux guy... but I've set up my diald (after a lot of effort & reading) to work. Don't know about the packets but for the constant dial thing I suppose that yes, that's what diald is there to do. You can edit diald.conf (man diald) to change various time limits for hungup / dial. A wild guess for the packets: Check rc.config for a "start routed=yes" and, if there, change to "no". Dimitris
