I've managed to setup a FTP daemon on the two Linux boxes I've connected via a private network. However I'm having this problem accessing the other Linux box via FTP. The problem is as follows: ftp fairlane Connected to fairlane 220 fairlane.fords.com.au FTP Server .............. Name (fairlane:root): ftp 530 User ftp access denied Login failed I only have two Linux machines connected to each other and I can't ftp both ways. Using either machine to access the other via ftp gets the above error message. I have setup a ftp account. I've also tried root and my personal account both getting the above message. I don't have a \etc\ftpusers file so I assume that no user accounts are denied at all. Also I've checked hosts.allow and that is set as ALL : ALL and nothing is in hosts.deny so what could be the problem? It seems strange that it didn't even ask me for the password before giving me the error message. I've installed wu-ftppackage on both machines as well. I was able to telnet to one other no problems and NFS works as well. So can anyone tell me what's going on? Thanks. Does your particular ftpd needs a ftpuser file? Check the documentation that comes with it. It may be sending the root password from one box to the other. Have you tried logging in on both boxes as the same user name with the same password? It might need a ftpusers file with nothing in it? Or better still, use the standard one that excludes the common system uids (<100). Is the ftp user's uid less than 100. On many systems, ftp user is uid 14 and used by the ftp server to gain access to files. Make sure that your ftp user's entry in the /etc/passwd file does not have a * in the second field. This will stop user access. eg. ftp:*:14:50:Ftp User:/home/ftp: Other than that, it could be a mystery :-) Greyman graham@gmcs.com.au thezombie@my-dejanews.com wrote in message <786k3a$so5$1@nnrp1.dejanews.com>... >I've managed to setup a FTP daemon on the two Linux boxes I've connected via a >private network. FTP is setup to not allow root ftp access by default , so this wasn't a
good example.

Put the following in your /etc/syslog.conf as root to see some debugging
info for ftp accesses. (use TAB's not spaces)
*.* /dev/tty8
Then reboot or restart the logging daemons and when you try out ftp'ing
hit CTRL+ALT+F8 to see logging messages from your ftp daemon. This way
you can get a much more detailed idea of what's going wrong.

Hope this helps,
Matt.

Are you using root to login. Make up some generic login with 1:6 and ftp into that login. thezombie@my-dejanews.com wrote: > > I've managed to setup a FTP daemon on the two Linux boxes I've connected via a > private network. I know in most distributions they are supposed to alias to the same thing as far as the FTP server is concerned, but I've seen ftp servers which refuse user ftp and allow user anonymous. So try anonymous and see how that goes. DaZZa

I'm not sure if the ftpd on Redhat does this, but Solaris 2.5 would refuse ftp access if the file /etc/shells exists and the user's login shell is not listed in it (sorry, I'm a programmer ;-) Perhaps that's the problem... ck. Did you try to remove the user root in your /etc/ftpaccess and loggin diretly with root user. This file is for disabled loggin true ftp for each user. You could try with another user !
