Help with setup of IP Tunnelling
#203

I am experiencing trouble getting and IP -IP tunnel operation over a PPP
connection between two linux servers.

The setup and rationale behind the setup of the ip-ip tunnel is as
follow:

At work I have a Linux box with dial in PPP enabled and operational. The
ethernet card (Clone NE2000 - eth0) has an IP address of
192.168.117.120, and is connected to A class C Network 192.168.117.0.
The name of this server is mercury. The dialin modem assigns the IP
address 192.168.117.121 to the remote end of the PPP connection.

At home I have a Network of thre Linux PC's. All machines on the home
network are on the IP Class C Network of 192.168.117.254. Philglt (
192.168.254.1) functions as the router for the network, and contains a
PCMCIA ehternet card, and a PCMCIA Modem. This machine used diald to
establish a PPP connection to Apollo at work, and Masquarades all
192.168.254.0 (as 192.168.117.121) addresses on the work network except
for apollo.

Mercury ( 192.168.254.2) and philg_apn (192.168.254.3) are connected to
phiglt via coax, and both have their default route pointing to philglt.

The entire network operates correctly, with routing between
192.168.117.0 and 192.168.254.0 operational.

The problem is that I am trying to setup an IP tunnel from apollo to
either mercury, or philg_apn, so that either of these machine has an ip
address in the 192.168.117.0 Class C network.

The reason for this requirement is that on the 192.168.117.60 is a
proprietry computer (called and ATEX), that uses has a special windows
ATEX terminal emulation package to access it from normal PC's. ( The
terminal Emulator is nothing like telnet or simple comms client, and
uses a highly proprietry protocol encapsulated in IP for remote access).
I am using Wine to run the emulator, and when my laptop (philg_apn) is
connected to the 192.168.117.0 network ( as 192.168.117.122) the
emulator work perfectly, and all is well with the world.

When dialed in, I am able to ping and traceroute successfully to the
ATEX server (192.168.117.60) using the masquarading setup already in
place, but I am not able to use the wine and windows Atex emulator to
connect successfully. Therefore I beleive that I need to have an IP-IP
tunnel so that either mercury, and/or philg_apn appear to be on
192.168.117.0.

I have read the various documents on the setup of the IP tunnels,
including NET-2-HOWTO, and NET-3-HOWTO's, VPN mini-HOWTO, and the
README.tunnel in the linux source tree. I have followed the instruction
in the README.tunnel in from the linux source tree, but the tunnel does
not appear to operate as I expect.

Kernal Versions on PHILG_APN and MERCURY are 2.0.35, while Apollo is
2.0.34. Slackware 3.5 (I think) is installed on all machines.

The following is the setup's that I am performing on each machine.

Once this setup up is complete I am able to ping 192.168.117.119 from
philg_apn, but not from apollo (192.168.117.120)

I have scoured the Web, and news groupd for a possible answer but to no
avail.

I hope that someone can provide some assistance in getting this to work.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

PS. Sorry about the table formatting for the routing tables - I known it
looks horrible.

Tried to avoid the ending Zero in the IP (not 192.168.117.0 but say,
192.168.117.1)? And, why do you assign a new IP to the PPP client? Izit
necessary?
