Hi there
Just wondering if anyone can help? I have been struggling with this for
a couple of weeks now and still no luck. I have 2 machines, both
running linux and win95. one has a dialup internet connection and they
are both connected via ethernet cards (ne2000 compatible ) i would like
to enable IP masquerading so that both have internet access. my problem
is that on the machine with the internet connection, i cannot get any
packets to go through the eth0 interface. whenever i ping the other
machine regardless of the routing table the packets are sent to the
loopback device. The other machine works fine. they are identical
ethernet cards. The diag util that came with them says they are working
fine. when the first machine is running win95 the network works fine
with ping telnet etc... I am pretty sure that the installs have no major
differences. i am running redhat 5 with 2.0.32 kernel. my ifconfig and
route output are attached to this email. This is exactly the same
output the other machine gives me except of course the eth0 IP address
is 192.168.1.2. I am pretty sure that the routing info is all there,
but i've tried adding default routes to the eth0 ip address but still no
difference. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Clayton Russell

The Linux IP Masq. mini-howto has detailed info on setting up ipmasq
as well as setting up various other OS's that are attached to the
private net.

You didn't mention setting the Win95 machine's gateway IP to that of
your Linux box. Try that...

I had a number of probs wiv 95 at firstone was reasonably simple like the
previous post suggested.
check that ur gateway is set to the other linux box.
I found i had to set this to the 192.168 address of my linux box or 95 would
spew, especially when disconnected from net.
some other probs i encountered were the dns
u can ither add ur isp dns's in here or if ur running a dns on ur linux
gatewey that one or you can add them all :)
of course if one dont work, it will try the next one.
thats what, I did and it werx great :)
but the biggest prob was having the gateway set right.if its set to the 192
address for ur server the default route should take care of packet transfers,
etc. If not ur asking for trouble.
in Linux mode, the machines are more tolerant i found, probably cause tcp/ip
is native to Linux and microsofts stack is screwed.
Anyway hope this helps
Tony

Hi,

Is your linuxbox connected to the Internet?
If so, has Win95 as gateway the linuxbox?

Gr.
