Hi there, I've burned a CD using win95 and have a lot of files with long names ( more than 8.3 characters). I tried to read them from linux (istalled inside a directory on my PC) and what I saw was the long file names are truncated and there is ~ sign on the file names. Anyone knows how I can get linux to read the file names properly and be able to install the softwares from CD instead of copying them into HD and renaming them? Thanks, Seyed

The problem is, can you get Win95 to WRITE long filenames properly. MicroSoft uses a proprietary (not Rock Ridge) extensions for long file names. -Tim -- ________________________________________________________________________ T i m o t h y W a t s o n tmwatson@umich.edu __/| Something there is that doesn't love a wall, that wants it down

I assume you have a line something like /dev/hda1 /dosc msdos defaults,uid=29044,gid=106,umask=007 1 1 in your /etc/fstab umount /dosc Change the 'msdos' to 'vfat' mount /dosc and all should be happy. If not you will have to recompile the kernel with the VFAT stuff turned on. Does it is possible to burn a VFAT on a CDROM? If the FS on the CDROM is indeed a VFAT, then mount the CDROM with FS type vfat instead of iso9660. If it's iso9660 (what I belive), then you should enable the Rockrigde Extensions when mounting the CDROM with linux. But I have a vague memory about that W95 can't write Rockrigde format, only plain iso9660. jue -- The opinions expressed in this message are my own personal views and do not reflect the official views of Microsoft Corporation

To store long filenames (among a lot of other things), Linux, as do all other *IXes, uses the Rock Ridge extensions. This is a sorta standard established way back. Now when Microsoft finally got round to supporting long filenames also (congratulations!), being wankers, they of course invented their own extension format. I think it's called Joliot?? Juliet?? Or something like that. There is no driver for Linux as of yet, as I know. And Microsoft has said (as I have picked up somewhere on the net from someone) that they will not support Rock Ridge. Now that is no surprise really - it was the reason in the first place not to be compatible with someone else, wasn't it? End of story: When making CDs with long filenames, scrap M$ and use mkisofs. It works. Volker -- Volker Kuhlmann (kuhlmav@elec.canterbury.ac.nz)
