[q]Does PPPD have to run in the foreground?

In trying to make sure the modem is still connected to an upline host, does
PPPD have to run in the foreground?
ie. If carrier is lost will PPPD exit gracefully or will it just sit there?

Thanks in advance

It doesn't, and shoulnd't remain in the foreground.. unless in debug
mode

The command 'modem' will make sure it exits gracefully

Craig,
pppd should exit gracefully if you have it properly configured.
If you use the diald package then you can achieve demand dialling
or autoredial as you choose.

It runs in the background. If you specify the keyword 'modem' then pppd will
recognize the line drop and hangup gracefully.
