SNMP on SUSE linux
#458

Hi

I am trying to use MRTG with a linux WWW server (SUSE 7). But I can't
perform SNMP polls to this server. Maybe SNMP is disabled for security
reasons. Where can I enable it? I can't find anything in
/etc/inetd.conf. -> where else? Is it a special packet I have to
install?

Any help appreciated!

As far as I know the SNMP daemon is running for its own and is
not controlled by INET daemon by default on SuSE linux.
In contrast to other linux distributions SuSE linux uses a
global configuration file: /etc/rc.config
There are lots of variables in it and if you installed the snmp
package correctly there should be an entry like "START_SNMPD=no".
Then you have to change the parameter "no" to "yes".
Finally you have to run "SuSEconfig" in order to process the
new configuration.
If done so you can now start the snmp daemon by typing:
rcsnmpd start
    	or:
/sbin/init.d/snmpd start

Furthermore, you should also change the snmpd.conf file.
